Stereotactic Radiosurgery

Stereotactic Radiosurgery | 2002
Stereotactic Radiosurgery is another way to treat brain tumors. Doctors use non-surgical techniques to pinpoint the exact location of the tumor. Treatment is given in one or more sessions; high-energy rays are aimed at the tumor from many angles. In this way, a high dose of radiation reaches the tumor without damaging other brain tissue.

The frameless system used at PCI, featured on KGMB-9 news in the video segment linked below, is the only one of its kind in Hawaii. Other systems require the placement of a head frame with 4 pins placed in the skull. The head frame must be worn until treatment is completed on the same day. Our system allows treatment to be performed even days later and does not require a frame placement.

Radiation Therapy

Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy | 2002
Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) is believed to be the greatest advance in radiation oncology since the introduction of the medical linear accelerator by Varian in 1960. IMRT represents the first use of a computer system to optimize the radiation delivery technique. This system evaluates millions of possible beam arrangements and creates a clinically optimized treatment plan. This plan conforms the radiation beams to the shape of the tumor, maximizing the radiation dose delivered while minimizing the dose delivered to the surrounding normal tissues.
